Formerly a gardener’s cottage for a neighboring estate, our clients embarked on two major renovations to accommodate their love of open, informal entertaining, in a setting for parties, and sleepovers for their two daughters. The resulting estate remains true to its English Arts and Crafts roots, while accommodating the contemporary needs of a young family.
In the most recent phase, Evens Architects’ John P. Margolis reimagined the family and bedroom areas, with a sympathetically scaled two-story addition enhanced by gables and dormers. An existing inadequate family area and, master suite, children’s quarters, and a guest suite were completely reworked around a new light and open stairway.
The final design maintained the existing greenhouse, while adding a large family room and sitting area to the west and south, and a guest suite and laundry to the north. On the second floor, the new plan enhances the girls’ bedroom and enlarges the master suite to include a new bath and dressing area.
